Above the sculpture and herb garden, at the foot of the Calvary, stands the Evangelical parish's Christuskirche. It is the first church to be built in the parish area. The architect, Professor Dr Otto Bartning, later became the most famous Protestant church builder of our century in Germany. What was to be built? A monumental Protestant church building would be in bad taste next to the cathedral. Bartning, who himself came from the Black Forest, designed a church that was as close as possible to the Black Forest farmhouse. The result is the Protestant Black Forest wooden church, today a household name far and wide and the destination of many visitors. Its name: Christuskirche. Inauguration: 13 December 1936. Bartning on the building idea: "On all my hikes in the southern Black Forest, as a child, as a man and finally with my children, the high and at the same time broad roof of the Black Forest farmhouses, which is both submissive to the wind and snow, the mountainside and the sun, and at the same time braces itself against them, made the deepest impression on me". In November 1989, the Black Forest Church burnt down completely and was then rebuilt true to the original plans.
