In earlier times, families were very poor, especially in our Black Forest region. As soon as they reached primary school age, children had to earn their own food from the farmers. The most common work that had to be done was herding cattle, cows, sheep and goats. These shepherd boys set off early in the morning to graze the herd in the lush green meadows.
