The two former castles - the mighty Roggenbach ruins with their striking towers and the somewhat smaller Steinegg ruins - date back to the 12th century and tell of the life of the knights, strategic border position and chequered history.
Today, the castle ruins are a popular excursion and hiking destination: the landscape can be explored on easily accessible paths, and from the walls there is an atmospheric view of the valley and the surrounding Black Forest. The atmosphere between old walls, green slopes and the gentle babbling of the stream conveys an impressive piece of history in the middle of nature.
