St Mary’s Chapel, Präg
On the outskirts of Präg, somewhat tucked away, stands a small wooden chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
There was once a St Gallus Chapel in Präg, which was first mentioned in a document dating from 1670. After this chapel was demolished in 1833 due to its dilapidated condition, a
prayer room was set up in the school building, which remained in use until 1868. Although plans to build a new chapel were already being considered at that time, it was not until 1951 that the
project could be realised. Vicar Karl Paulus consecrated the new chapel on 29 August 1952. On this occasion, the
Mother of God as its patron saint. The previous patronage is still commemorated by the fact that the branch church in Geschwend was granted
St Gallus as its secondary patron.
The Freiburg architect Adolf Lorenz had drawn up the plans for the chapel, which was built entirely of timber. The recessed chancel, of the same shape, adjoins the rectangular nave. The chancel has two windows, whilst the nave has four larger and two smaller windows, all of which are topped with segmental arches. The entire interior is panelled with fir wood. Above the gable roof rises the ridge turret with a slender hexagonal pyramid. It houses the bell, which was cast at the Grüninger bell foundry in Villingen in 1921.
