St Augustine, who came from Thagaste (North Africa), found his way to faith and the Church after an eventful youth through the prayers of his mother, St Monica. After listening to the sermons of St Ambrose, he was baptised in Milan in 387. He became a priest and later Bishop of Hippo Regio (North Africa) and died in 430 during the siege of the city by the Vandals. He was an important theologian, of whom almost 1000 sermons, 113 books and 218 letters have survived. His most famous book, the "Confessiones" (Confessions), describes his path to faith. He is revered as a Doctor of the Church.
In the Middle Ages, Mettenberg and other villages belonged to the parish of Riedern am Wald. The Augustinian canons founded a monastery there in 1190 and took over pastoral care in this extensive area.
In 1806, the Riedern am Wald monastery was dissolved in the course of secularisation. Mettenberg has belonged to the parish of Grafenhausen since 1980. The age of the chapel is not known, but its predecessor was already dedicated to St Augustine.
