St. Blasien College
The monastery in Sankt Blasien is a former Benedictine abbey that dates back to the 9th century. Today, the historic building houses a boarding school for boys and girls.
The monastery back then
The small Cella Blasii, as the first monks once called their small monastery in the 9th century, grew into a large monastery with possessions and branches far into Switzerland and as far as the Stuttgart area.
Franz ll. Schächtelin (1727 to 1747), the first abbot of the monastery to bear the title of prince abbot, had the old monastery torn down and the monastery complex as it still stands today built by the master builder Michael Beer von Blaichten.
The monastery today
After the dissolution of the monastery in 1806, industry initially moved into the buildings until the Jesuit order acquired the monastery in 1933 and opened the College of St. Blasien, a grammar school and boarding school.
Over 800 boys and girls are taught here, of which around 300 live in the boarding school. Today, the college is open to the world, with the Euroclass and Chinese lessons, with partner schools in China and many European countries.
Behind the magnificent baroque façade you will find the former dining hall at court, now the house chapel, the banqueting hall, the Habsburg hall and the salons in their various colours.
The monastery and its historic rooms can also be visited at set times, and monastery concerts are regularly held in the banqueting hall. More information at www.kloster-konzerte.de
