The Bismarck Monument on the Seebuck
A landmark of the Feldberg: the Bismarck Monument on the Seebuck combines history with stunning panoramic views of Lake Feldsee and the peaks of the Black Forest Highlands.
Popular vantage point
The Bismarck Monument on the Seebuck is not only a cultural monument, but also a popular starting point and waypoint for numerous walks on the Feldberg. From here, paths lead to the summit of the Feldberg, as well as along scenic high-altitude routes through Baden-Württemberg’s largest nature reserve – for example, the Feldbergsteig or the Kleine Hüttenrunde.
From the Bismarck Monument on the Seebuck, there are impressive views of the surrounding Black Forest landscape. Particularly worth seeing is the view down to the Feldsee, which, nestled amongst its steep cirque walls, is a true natural gem.
Construction and history of the Bismarck Monument
The idea to build the Bismarck Monument first arose as early as 1890, when admirers of Bismarck met for the first time on the Feldberg. After several years of planning, the monument was erected based on designs by Professor D. Dietsche, who modelled the relief of Bismarck, and under the supervision of Freiburg’s city architect, Thoma.
After the Second World War, the structure fell into increasing disrepair and partially collapsed in 1956 due to erosion damage. However, as it had long since become a landmark on the Feldberg, the municipality of Feldberg campaigned for its preservation. In 1966, the monument was rebuilt with the support of donations and the then Black Forest Highlands district.
Today, the Bismarck Monument is a popular destination for day trips and a beautiful vantage point. It is situated near the top station of the Feldberg Cable Car and can therefore be easily reached by gondola, or via the signposted hiking trails from the Feldberger Hof or the Feldberg car park.
