3 facts about Grafenhausen
Swiss territory: Grafenhausen used to belong to the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen, but was "exchanged" for the village of Schleitheim in 1530. However, Schaffhausen retained the right to manage 360 hectares of forest, which is still the case today. The forest is still managed by a cantonal forester today.
Village of 1,000 stars: Every year at Christmas time, Grafenhausen is decorated with 1,000 stars. The stars can be purchased for a good cause and give the village a unique atmosphere.
Germany's highest brewery: The cult beer "Tannenzäpfle" is brewed at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres. This makes the brewery the highest in the whole of Germany. The Tannenzäpfle's fan base even extends all over the world.
Grafenhausen and its suburbs
Staufen: This district is the starting point for the "Rappenfelsensteig" premium hiking trail. Here you can experience the deepest primeval forest in the Black Forest, passing imposing rock piles and unique views from small clearings in the forest. With a bit of luck, you may even spot chamois here.
Mettenberg-Buggenried: The Hochplatteau around Mettenberg is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the Alpine views of the Swiss mountain range. Thanks to the special location, foggy days are a rarity in this area.
Rothaus: Not an official district of Grafenhausen, but you can discover many other attractions here in addition to the brewery. For example, the Hüsli local history museum or the Schlühüwana trail, a special adventure trail for children with a barefoot path and swimming opportunities at the Schlüchtsee lake.
