The scenery above the valley of the Menzenschwander Alb is dominated by the wooded ridge of the Spießhörner. The Herzogenhorn, at 1415 metres the second highest mountain in the Black Forest, remains hidden in the background. Only in the furthest valley basin do the marvellous views open up to the gleaming white eastern flank, the infamous Wechtenkessel. Although most hikers head for the summit from Bernau or the Feldberg Pass, the long ascent from Menzenschwand-Vorderdorf is no less impressive. On the way, we have the opportunity to stop off at the Krunkelbachhütte for a cosy break.
