On the occasion of St. Märgen's 900th anniversary, the path was re-carved. The Grenz-Steine trail runs along the footpath from the centre of St. Märgen to the district of Thurner. This path also marks the historical border between the two former communities of St. Märgen and Hinterstraß. It is also the watershed between the two natural areas of the large Black Forest valleys of Elz and Dreisamtal. Each stele represents a century. Reliefs, symbols and sculptures illustrate the various themes. The order of the boundary stones is not chronological. This is to emphasise that the story is not yet complete.
