Path condition
Away from busy roads, the route runs mainly along well-maintained forest tracks and tarmac-surfaced local roads, passing through almost all the hamlets around Bonndorf.
Dense forests, open plateaus and idyllic valleys alternate constantly along the route, ensuring a varied cycling experience. Time and again, sweeping views open up across the Black Forest landscape as far as the Feldberg region and, on a clear day, even as far as the Swiss Alps. The elevated sections and panoramic trails in particular are what give this circuit its special charm.
As well as challenging climbs, the route also offers numerous quieter sections where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Along the way, barbecue huts, rest areas, fountains and inns invite you to take a break surrounded by nature. The tour thus combines active exercise with the relaxed atmosphere of the Black Forest and is suitable for both ambitious cyclists and leisure cyclists who wish to discover the region’s diverse landscape.
Directions
The circular route starts at the hikers’ car park by the railway bridge at the Schluchsee junction and initially follows the well-maintained Bähnler Cycle Route – or the Southern Black Forest Cycle Route – towards Holzschlag. This is where the route’s first significant climb begins, leading up towards Glashütte. After the first few metres of ascent, beautiful views over the Black Forest hills and the Baar landscape already come into view.
As the route continues, it takes you along quiet forest paths and forest roads through extensive woodland to the Hummelhütte and on towards Sommerau. Here, pleasant sections for cycling alternate with a few steeper climbs. The route then continues through varied woodland sections to the Ebersbacherhütte and along scenic paths towards the Saubach Valley.
After crossing the main road, the route continues along several woodland and high-altitude paths to the Kreuzplatzhütte, which is ideal for a break. The route then descends into the Steinatal valley. If you wish, you can make a short detour en route to the historic Roggenbach castles.
From there, the tour climbs again towards Wittlekofen and Wellendingen. The route passes through small Black Forest villages, past meadows, the edges of the forest and quiet side roads. Time and again, open plateaus offer impressive distant views across the surrounding countryside.
The circuit continues via Brunnadern, Dillendorf and Münchingen. The final few kilometres in particular offer a varied mix of open panoramic paths and shady woodland sections. Shortly before the finish, the route follows the Tiefental Panoramic Trail, offering stunning views over the fir-topped peaks of the Black Forest.
Finally, the route takes you back along quiet forest paths to the starting point at the railway bridge, where the approximately 50-kilometre tour ends.
